Round 9: Mark Takes a Dozen

10th May:
[Trophy Presentation]
Trophy Presentation

Mark has returned to form with a dominant performance taking 12 skins. The birdie on the tough 6th hole set up the win and he completed the job with 3 points on the index 1 16th.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single stableford with 118 players and Medley 2BBB with 71 pairs. Local rules in place today: 30cm preferred lies in the general area and rake and place for the bunkers.

The A grade winner scored 41 points, B grade 37 points and the C grade winner scored 36. The top medley 2BBB score was 51 points.

No interesting shots today but many drives were interrupted by trees.

Conditions:

The course was damp after the recent rain and the weather was fine.

Rules of the Round:

Preferred Lies - Model Local Rule E-3

"When any part of a player's ball touches part of the general area cut to fairway height or less [or identify a specific area such as 'on the fairway of the 6th hole'], the player may take free relief once by placing the original ball or another ball in and playing it from this relief area:

  • Reference Point: Spot of the original ball.
  • Size of Relief Area Measured from Reference Point: [Specify size of relief area, such as one club-length, one scorecard length or 6 inches] from the reference point, but with these limits:
  • Limits on Location of Relief Area:
    • Must not be nearer the hole than the reference point, and
    • Must be in the general area.

In proceeding under this Local Rule, the player must choose a spot to place the ball and use the procedures for replacing a ball under Rules 14.2b(2) and 14.2e. But, for the purposes of applying Rule 14.2e, the player has only chosen the spot on which to place the ball once the ball has been set down, and the player has let the ball go with the intent for that ball to be in play. After a ball has been placed and is in play under this Local Rule, if the player then proceeds under another Rule that provides relief, this Local Rule may be used again.

Penalty for Playing Ball from a Wrong Place in Breach of Local Rule: General Penalty Under Rule 14.7a."

General Area Definition

The area of the course that covers all of the course except for the other four defined areas:

  1. the teeing area the player must play from in starting the hole they are playing,
  2. all penalty areas,
  3. all bunkers, and
  4. the putting green of the hole the player is playing.

Round 8: No Skins Play

26th April:

As the Nth Turramurra Foursomes Championship was run today, the Skins round was cancelled.

NT Foursomes Championship
[C Grade Foursomes Champions]
C Grade Foursomes Champions

The Nth Turramurra competition was the foursomes championship with three divisions:

The 30cm preferred lies local rule was in place through the green and the 30cm rake and place local rule was in place for the bunkers.

We had three pairs in the Foursomes: two in B grade and one in C grade.

Our C Grade pair used cunning conservative tactics and discussed each shot to be played. This strategy proved to be effective as they went on the take the trophy by 7 strokes.

The pairs in B grade should take note as they rarely discussed shots. Friends of DavidM may find this hard to believe.

The A grade winners scored 70, B grade 83 and the C grade winners (Craig and SteveB) scored 87.

Interesting Shots:

SteveB had a creative shot on the 3rd fairway where the ball landed 3 metres behind him. This was not a problem as the pair went on to bogey the hole after a long putt by Craig.

[The Playing Group]
The Playing Group
Conditions:

The sky looked threatening often but we remained dry for the whole round.

The course fairways and greens were in fine condition and the local rule for bunkers allowed us to rake and place.

Rules of the Round:

16.1 Abnormal Course Conditions (Including Immovable Obstructions)

16.1/1 – Relief from Abnormal Course Condition May Result in Better or Worse Conditions

If a player receives a better lie, area of intended swing or line of play in taking relief under Rule 16.1, this is the player’s good fortune. There is nothing in Rule 16.1 that requires them to maintain identical conditions after relief is taken.

For example, in taking relief from a sprinkler head (immovable obstruction) in the rough, the player’s nearest point of complete relief or relief area may be located in the fairway. If this results in the player being able to drop a ball in the fairway, this is allowed.

In some situations, the conditions may be less advantageous to the player after relief is taken as compared with the conditions before relief is taken, such as when the nearest point of complete relief or relief area is in an area of rocks.

Round 7: PeterD Picks Up Nine

12th March:
[Trophy Presentation]

Our low handicapper, PeterD, has finally lived up to his potential and dominated the skins. To boot, he celebrates with 36 points and a $30 prize for for 3rd place in A grade.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single stableford with 122 players and Medley 2B aggregate with 74 pairs. Local rules in place today: 30cm preferred lies on the fairway and rake and place for the bunkers.

The A grade winner scored 37 points, B grade 36 points and the C grade winner scored 35. The top medley 2B aggregate score was 70 points.

The tee booking system was kinder this round with just 30 minutes between groups.

DavidM has returned to top form and led the way with 7 skins by winning 3 holes and topped our stableford scores with 36 points.

The Steves also displayed great skill with spectacular birdies.

Rules of the Round:

16.1 Abnormal Course Conditions (Including Immovable Obstructions)

b. Relief for Ball in General Area

If a player’s ball is in the general area and there is interference by an abnormal course condition on the course, the player may take free relief by dropping the original ball or another ball in this relief area (see Rule 14.3):

  • Reference Point: The nearest point of complete relief in the general area.
  • Size of Relief Area Measured from Reference Point: One club-length, but with these limits:
  • Limits on Location of Relief Area:
    • Must be in the general area,
    • Must not be nearer the hole than the reference point, and
    • There must be complete relief from all interference by the abnormal course condition.

Round 4: A trophy presentation at last

1st March:
[Trophy Presentation]
Trophy Presentation

For the first time in 2025 we had both groups out with close tee times. Unfortunately those tee times were late morning and the day turned out to be hot.

Mark's experience at playing the late tee times might have helped as he put together a very tidy even par round and won the skins on 4 holes. SteveH also had a good round, finishing two over and won one hole which netted him a bag of 7 skins and the win for the day.

The Nth Turramurra competition was Par format with 129 players in the men's comp. The course condition is now so good that the 30cm Preferred Lies local rule is no longer in effect.

The A grade winner scored +5 and the B grade winner scored +6.

SteveB with a tee shot to 11.5 SBS.

Interesting Shots:

- SteveH chipped in from off the green on 15 to make a birdie and secure 7 skins.

Conditions:

The weather was hot and humid with very little breeze. There was also some smoke from controlled burns drifting across the course. All players exhausted by the end of the round and hoping for proper Autumn weather next round.

Rules of the Round:

Round 3: Craig Conquers the Royal

15th February:
[Trophy Presentation]
Trophy Presentation

The groups were separated by a few hours again this week so there was no post round skins presentation possible. Fortunately, Craig did the calculation at home and announced the results via WhatsApp.

Craig had a solid front 9 with a couple of bad holes but finished with a great back 9 to make the our top nett score of +2.

The skins result followed with Craig taking 7 ahead of Sujay and SteveH with 4 each.

The Nth Turramurra competition was the Summer cup with 114 players in the men's comp. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and the bunkers were GUR.

The Nett winner scored -8 off a handicap of 29. Runner-up was -6 off a handicap of 20. The scratch winner scored -1 off a handicap of 0.

Interesting Shots:

- SteveB made a spectacular birdie on the 6th after claiming a miss hit approach shot to tap-in distance.
- The 10th provided entertainment again this round with 3 long distance putts for birdie and a paltry par by SteveB.
- On the 12th fairway, SteveB luckily avoided two balls from the 13th tee only to be hit by the third. A bruise photo may be provided.

Conditions:

The weather was pleasant today: sunny and breezy.

Rules of the Round:

11.1 Ball in Motion Accidentally Hits Person or Outside Influence

a. No Penalty to Any Player

If a player’s ball in motion accidentally hits any person (including the player) or outside influence:

  • There is no penalty to any player.
  • This is true even if the ball hits the player, the opponent or any other player or any of their caddies or equipment.
Exception – Ball Played on Putting Green in Stroke Play:

If the player’s ball in motion hits another ball at rest on the putting green and both balls were on the putting green before the stroke, the player gets the general penalty (two penalty strokes).

Round 2: SteveH just ahead of SteveB

1st February:
[Trophy Presentation]
Trophy Presentation

The tee booking system caught us out this week with the 2 groups separated by over two hours.

SteveB waited patiently for the second group to finish 10 holes to take a photo and pass on the stats from group 1.

PeterD got off to a great start in 2025 with a chip in birdie on hole 1. He went on to make 2 more birdies only to have all three immediately squared by his playing partners making par.

SteveB had a mixed day on the greens, two long birdie putts dropped but many holes saw 3 or 4 putts before the ball was holed.

DavidM played well in group 2 with some powerful low and running drives as shown on the longest drive hole.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single stableford with 140 players. Also, a different teams event with 3/4 best 2 aggregate stableford.
The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers.

The A grade winner scored 45 points and the B grade winner scored 42. The best two aggregate winners scored 80 points.

The weather was overcast early with some patchy drizzle, followed later by some full sun with high humidity.

A disappointing start for 2025 round 1 as Royal North Turramurra was very wet and windy and all players chose to miss the round.
