2023 Xmas Round

16th December:
[2023 Players]
The 2023 Playing Group

The 2023 championship started with a A number of withdrawals due to possible Covid infections. Sujay's friend MarkT joined us again to make a total of 7 starters.

NT Professional Bryce monitored our tee shots on the first with a Trackman launch monitor. We are to receive the results via email.

The harsh 3 club rule caused some disquiet before the round started. Especially with the last minute withdrawal of the rule author. Happily, by the end of the round, most were comfortable with the rule.

The 3 clubs selected were mostly conventional except for our low handicapper, PeterD, being the outlier with an enormous gap between the 3 hybrid and the 50 degree wedge.

The heat may have affected the score of some players but not the cunningly prepared cart rider, PeterH. Needless to say, PeterH took the win with Craig in second place.

The Nth Turramurra competition was the usual stableford and 2BBB with the NTP on the 15th. The A grade winner scored 41 points, B grade winner scored 42 points and the 2BBB winners scored 50 points.

Special Conditions for Xmas Round 2023

Round 24: DavidM Wins Again

2nd December:
[Presentation 2023Dec02a]
Presentation

Another high scoring round at Royal North and SteveB continued in fine form. But it was not enough to take the trophy as DavidM won with 8 skins including a birdie on the par 5 ninth.

In the championship, SteveB held a confident 7 skin lead before this final round. Things got very tense with DavidM gathering 8 and taking a 1 skin lead after 9 holes. Immediately SteveB regained the lead with 2 skins on the 11th and held on for a first championship win.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single and 2BBB Stableford with 62 players in Grade A and 51 in Grade B.

The A grade winner scored 41 points and the B Grade winner was SteveB with 44 points. The 2BBB winning score was 51 points with the two Steves missing 3rd place on count-back with 49 points.

Round 23: SteveB's form streak continues

18th November:
[Presentation 2023Nov18a]
Presentation

Steve B continued his recent great form, backing up the D grade Club Championship runner up with a big Skins win as well as winner of B Grade with 40 points.

A massive 5 pointer on the 6th was the highlight of his great round. The remaining players all played solid golf with 4 achieving handicap or better.

SteveB has built a solid 7 skin lead heading into the final skins round, but the field is still chasing with the winner still unclear.

The Nth Turramurra competition was a single and 2BBB Stableford with 52 players in Grade A and 46 in Grade B. The NTP winner was 224cm from the flag.

The A grade winner scored 39 points and the B Grade winner was SteveB with 40 points. Craig was third in B Grade with 38 points. No news on the 2BBB winning score.

Round 21: Craig Conquers

21st October:
[Presentation 2023Oct21a]
Presentation

By parring a couple of difficult par threes Craig captured the trophy in a very competitive skins round. The climax was the 4 points from a slick up-and-down for par on the index one 16th hole.

SteveB has maintained the championship lead just 1 point ahead of DavidM.

We were joined by Anthony to partner DavidM in the 2 ball.

The Nth Turramurra competition was a single and 2B Aggregate Stableford with 62 players in Grade A and 54 in Grade B. NTP was on the 15th. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule continues for fairways and bunkers.

The A grade winner scored 47 points and the B Grade winner scored 46 points. DavidM was third in A Grade with 39 points. The 2B Aggregate winners scored 82 points.

Round 20: SteveB Supreme

7th October:
[Presentation 2023Oct07a]
Presentation

After an unlucky loss in the previous round, SteveB has continued his good form dominating the round with 9 skins. The skins came from two 4-point holes with a birdie on the 4th and a par on the 13th. This was topped up with a fine bogie on the 18th. Steve now leads the championship by five.

Some cheeky commentators suggested that the good form started with the high-speed Sunday practice round with the ladies.

Sujay was unavailable and we were joined by Tim Hughes to partner SteveB in the 2 ball.

The Nth Turramurra competition was a single and 2BBB Stableford with 121 players. Drive & pitch on the 10th and the usual NTP on the 15th. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers.

Today was the first use of the BRSGOLF scoring APP and it seemed to work fairly well. There was some trouble registering guest players. Also, the match details for our guest player did not make it to Golflink until prompted.

The Div 1 winner scored 39 points and the Div 2 winner scored 42 points. SteveB was third in Div 2 with 38 points. The 2BBB winners scored 52 points and SteveB and Tim were second with 48 points.

Round 19: DavidM is Still Winning

24th September:
[Presentation 2023Sep24a]
Presentation

We were presented with no queue and an empty first fairway to start this unusual Sunday Skins round. Putting was often a lottery as the greens were still recovering after the maintenance coring.

It only took one hole win with a birdie on the 7th for DavidM to gather the 5 skins he needed to win the round. He has now joined Sujay in the lead with 51 skins. SteveB was unlucky to miss out on the win with 4 points on holes 2 and 9.

With PeterD unavailable, we were joined by Tom Parish to partner SteveH in the 2 ball.

The Nth Turramurra competition was a mixed single and 2BBB Stableford with 27 players only. NTP on the 15th. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers.

The winner scored 39 points, Tom was 3rd with 37. Tom and SteveH won the 2BBB with 46 points with SteveB and PeterH close behind, also on 46 points.

Interesting Shots:

Despite an OOB second shot, Mark secured a single skin by winning the par five 8th hole with a seven for 2 points.

Two players managed to hit some side netting on two holes. On the 10th, PeterH made a valiant but unsuccessful bid to clear the net into the soccer field. On the 14th, the SteveB tee shot avoided Curagul Road by hitting the net.

Conditions:

Fine weather becoming cool at the end of the round.

Rules of the Round:

Round 18: DavidM Wins Again

9th September:

Report by SteveB

[Presentation 2023Sep09a]
Presentation

A single group of 4 players took part in a fun round of skins golf. The weather was fine and the course fast apart from the greens which were still recovering from their recent coring.

All four players were still in with a chance to take the skins trophy until the 17th hole where the on course leader DavidM's par netted him 4 more skins and sealed a run away win.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single Stableford and 2BBB with 108 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers.

The A grade winner scored 41 points and the B grade winner scored 50 points. The 2BBB winning pair scored 52 points. DavidM picked up 3rd place on countback in A grade.

Stableford Individual Scores
[Name (hcap) Points Skins]:
2BBB Stableford Scores:
Birdies:

None.

Longest drive (13th hole):

PeterD with a tee shot of 237m.

Nearest to the pin (15th):

DavidM with a tee shot to 9 dms.

Interesting Shots:
Conditions:

Cool early but warmed up after the first half dozen holes. The breeze was a factor on several holes. As mentioned earlier, the greens were still showing the effects of the recent coring, making putting more difficult than usual.

Rules of the Round:

Is it a penalty if you step on your own ball in the fairway while absent mindedly walking towards where you thought it had ended up?

Rule 7.4 Ball Accidentally Moved in Trying to Find or Identify It

There is no penalty if the player’s ball is accidentally moved by the player, opponent or anyone else while trying to find or identify it. But if the player causes the ball to move before they start to search for the ball, the player gets one penalty stroke under Rule 9.4b.

Under this Rule, “accidentally” includes when the ball is moved by anyone taking reasonable actions to find the ball that were likely to reveal the ball’s location by moving it (such as by sweeping feet through long grass or shaking a tree).

In these situations, the ball must be replaced on its original spot (which if not known must be estimated) (see Rule 14.2). In doing so:

  • If the ball was on, under or against any immovable obstruction, integral object, boundary object or growing or attached natural object, the ball must be replaced on its original spot on, under or against such object (see Rule 14.2c).
  • If the ball was covered by sand, the original lie must be re-created and the ball must be replaced in that lie (see Rule 14.2d(1)). But the player may leave a small part of the ball visible when doing so.

See also Rule 15.1a (restriction on deliberately removing certain loose impediments before replacing ball).

Penalty for Breach of Rule 7.4: General Penalty.

Round 17: Sujay On Top

26th August:
[Presentation 2023Aug26a]
Presentation

Despite missing two of our top players, the contest for skins was in doubt until the 18th hole where Sujay snapped up the final 3 skins.

He now moves another point clear of the competition and remains on top of the Skins Championship with 47.

In the spirit of keeping names in pairs, Sujay brought his friend Mark to join in for the round. Unfortunately Mark is not in town often enough to be a regular. At least, he did find our skins competition somewhat amusing.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single and 2BBB stableford with 106 players. There was a drive and pitch on the 10th hole (NTP in 2 shots) and NTP on the 15th. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers.

The A grade winner scored 38 points, PeterH 3rd on 37. In B grade the winner scored 40 points with MarkB 4th on 39. MarkB and PeterH won the the 2BBB with 50 points.

6th (par 4): Sujay, MarkT, PeterH, SteveH *
12th (par 4): DavidM

* The 6th hole was shortened to 80 metres due to fairway repairs. The par and index for the hole remained the same. SteveH scored 5 points for his birdie.

Longest drive (13th hole):

SteveH with a tee shot of 239m.

Nearest to the pin (15th):

MarkB with a tee shot to 7.0 mbs.

Interesting Shots:
Conditions:

The fine and pleasant weather was enhanced by a good pace of play AND the provision of a BBQ sausage sizzle.

Rules of the Round:

9.4 Ball Lifted or Moved by Player

This Rule applies only when it is known or virtually certain that a player (including the player’s caddie) lifted their ball at rest or the player's or their caddie's actions caused it to move.

a. When Lifted or Moved Ball Must Be Replaced

If the player lifts their ball at rest or causes it to move, the ball must be replaced on its original spot (which if not known must be estimated) (see Rule 14.2), except:

  • When the player lifts the ball under a Rule to take relief or to replace the ball on a different spot (see Rules 14.2d and 14.2e), or
  • When the ball moves only after the player has begun the stroke or the backswing for a stroke and then goes on to make the stroke (see Rule 9.1b).

b. Penalty for Lifting or Deliberately Touching Ball or Causing It to Move

If the player lifts or deliberately touches their ball at rest or causes it to move, the player gets one penalty stroke.

But there are five exceptions:

Exception 1 – Player Allowed to Lift or Move Ball: There is no penalty when the player lifts the ball or causes it to move under a Rule that:

  • Allows the ball to be lifted and then replaced on its original spot,
  • Requires a moved ball to be replaced on its original spot, or
  • Requires or allows the player to drop or place a ball again or to play a ball from a different place.

Exception 2 – Accidental Movement in Trying to Find or Identify Ball: There is no penalty when the player accidentally causes the ball to move while trying to find or identify it (see Rule 7.4).

Exception 3 – Accidental Movement on Putting Green: There is no penalty when the player accidentally causes the ball to move on the putting green (see Rule 13.1d), no matter how that happens.

Exception 4 – Accidental Movement Anywhere Except on Putting Green While Applying Rule: There is no penalty when the player accidentally causes the ball to move anywhere except on the putting green while taking reasonable actions to:

  • Mark the spot of the ball or lift or replace the ball, when allowed to do so (see Rules 14.1 and 14.2),
  • Remove a movable obstruction (see Rule 15.2),
  • Restore worsened conditions, when allowed to do so (see Rule 8.1d),
  • Take relief under a Rule, including in determining whether relief is available under a Rule (such as swinging a club to see if there is interference from a condition), or where to take relief (such as determining the nearest point of complete relief), or
  • Measure under a Rule (such as to decide the order of play under Rule 6.4).

Exception 5 – Ball Moves After Coming to Rest Against Player or Equipment: There is no penalty if, after the player’s ball comes to rest against the player or their equipment as a result of a stroke (Rule 11.1) or dropping the ball (Rule 14.3c(1)), the player causes the ball to move when they move or when they remove their equipment.

Penalty for Playing Ball from a Wrong Place in Breach of Rule 9.4: General Penalty under Rule 14.7a.

If a player is required to replace a moved ball under Rule 9.4 but fails to do so and plays from a wrong place, they get only the general penalty under Rule 14.7a (see Rule 1.3c(4) Exception).

Definition of General Penalty

Loss of hole in match play or two penalty strokes in stroke play.

Round 16: Count-back Uproar

12th August:
[Presentation 2023Aug12a]
Presentation

The two Peters returned to skins after a 6 week break providing a full complement of 8 players. The mild weather made for a very pleasant round.

The post match gathering was the usual jovial event as the results were calculated. Skins were spread around and 3 players finished with four, so we went to a count-back.

The result was a win to PeterH with 2 hole wins and sadly this prompted some hooting and jeering from the group, including from some rowdy founding members.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single and 2B aggregate stableford with 100 players. NTP on the 5th and 15th with long drive on the 12th. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers.

The A grade winner scored 38 points. In B grade the winner was PeterH with 38 points, Craig was runner-up with 37 and SteveH was 4th with 37 on count-back. Craig and PeterH won the the 2B Aggregate with 74 points (75 in fact).

Longest drive (13th hole):

Interesting Shots:

On the par 3 second hole, Mark's tee shot was his usual classic extreme draw (NB not a hook). The ball curved from no mans land to pitch on the edge of the green and roll across to pin high. And he made the birdie putt.

Conditions:

Another fine spring day.

Rules of the Round:

Rule 11.1 Ball in Motion Accidentally Hits Person or Outside Influence

a. No Penalty to Any Player

If a player’s ball in motion accidentally hits any person (including the player) or outside influence:

  • There is no penalty to any player.
  • This is true even if the ball hits the player, the opponent or any other player or any of their caddies or equipment.

Round 15: Keeping it in the (Parramatta Eels) family

29th July:

Report by SteveB

[Presentation 2023Jul29a]
Presentation

Six players took part in a hotly contested round of skins golf. We are not sure whether it was spring weather arriving early or PeterD's holiday snaps of iconic courses but everyone put together very tidy scores this round.

The skins scoring was brutal with many holes squared with 3 pointers and no one managing more than two hole wins. In the end, SteveH's two wins at the end of a series of squared holes was enough to get him over the line by a single skin.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single Stableford with 110 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers. The A grade winner scored 41 points and the B grade winner scored 40 points. In lieu of a team competition there was a longest drive competition on the 12th hole.

Stableford Individual Scores
[Name (hcap) Points Skins]:

Sujay with a tee shot to 1 flag pole length plus 35 cms.

Interesting Shots:

The birdies were made in contrasting ways

Conditions:

Perfect, spring arrived early with the jumpers coming off after the first hole.

Rules of the Round:
Can you move rocks in a hazard, specifically the largish rocks in the hazard in front of the third green?

Loose impediments and movable obstructions can be moved anywhere on or off the golf course, including in bunkers and penalty areas, even when your ball also lies in the bunker or penalty area.

If your ball moves when moving a movable obstruction, there is no penalty and you simply replace the ball.

However, you need to be careful when moving loose impediments because if that causes your ball to move, you get a one-stroke penalty (with only a few exceptions) and must replace your ball.

Moveable Obstruction Definition

An obstruction that can be moved with reasonable effort and without damaging the obstruction or the course.

If part of an immovable obstruction or integral object (such as a gate or door or part of an attached cable) meets these two standards, that part is treated as a movable obstruction.

But this does not apply if the movable part of an immovable obstruction or integral object is not meant to be moved (such as a loose stone that is part of a stone wall).

Even when an obstruction is movable, the Committee may define it to be an immovable obstruction.

Round 14: Craig wins with back 9 blitz

15th July:

Report by SteveB

[Presentation 2023Jul151a]
Presentation

Five players and a guest, Sujay's friend Mark, took on the North Turramurra course on a glorious Sydney winter's day. The scoring was up and down with skins being won on most holes. A very consistent 20 stableford point back 9 by Craig had enough winning holes to see him home to a narrow win.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single and 2BBB Stableford with 108 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers. The A grade winner scored 35 points and the B grade winner scored 37 points. The winning 2BBB score was 44 points.

However, as most players found a varous times, thinned approach shots were punished!

Rules of the Round:

Can you move rocks in a hazard, specifically the largish rocks in the hazard in front of the third green?

Rule 15.2 Movable Obstructions

This Rule covers free relief that is allowed from artificial objects that meet the definition of movable obstruction.

It does not give relief from immovable obstructions (a different type of free relief is allowed under Rule 16.1) or boundary objects or integral objects (no free relief is allowed).

a. Relief from Movable Obstruction

(1) Removal of Movable Obstruction.

Without penalty, a player may remove a movable obstruction anywhere on or off the course and may do so in any way.

But there are two exceptions:

  • Exception 1: Tee Markers Must Not Be Moved When Ball Will Be Played from Teeing Area (see Rules 6.2b(4) and 8.1a(1)).
  • Exception 2: Restrictions on Deliberately Removing Movable Obstruction to Affect a Ball in Motion (see Rule 11.3).

If a player's ball moves while they are removing a movable obstruction:

  • There is no penalty, and
  • The ball must be replaced on its original spot (which if not known must be estimated) (see Rule 14.2).

(2) Relief When Ball Is in or on Movable Obstruction

Anywhere on Course Except on Putting Green. The player may take free relief by lifting the ball, removing the movable obstruction and dropping the original ball or another ball in this relief area (see Rule 14.3):

  • Reference Point:
The estimated point right under where the ball was at rest in or on the movable obstruction.
  • Size of Relief Area Measured from Reference Point:
One club-length, but with these limits:
Limits on Location of Relief Area:
  • Must be in the same area of the course as the reference point, and
  • Must not be nearer the hole than the reference point.

Round 13: Second Triple Crown for the Year

1st July:

Report by SteveB

[Presentation 2023Jul01b]
Greenkeeper Down

With only 4 players and an 11th tee start, this was perhaps the first skins round with skins scored starting from the 11th and finishing on the 10th. The first 8 greens were dewy with the reason revealed as we played the 18th, our 8th, hole, a green keeping incident earlier in the morning meant they hadn't been mowed! Thankfully the staff member had escaped with no serious injuries.

DavidM jumped out to an early lead and after the first 8 holes had the triple crown firmly in his sights with the longest drive, nearest the pin and 6 skins already in the bag. Progress slowed on the back ten and he started the last hole with 7 skins and Sujay a chance to force a countback. However he needn't have worried, Sujay and SteveB squared the hole with pars and the triple crown was his.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single and 2BBB Stableford with 116 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers. The A grade and B grade winners both scored 35 points with Sujay missing a 4th place prize in B grade on countback. The winning 2BBB score was 44 points.

Conditions:

Perfect, if a bit on the cold side, for the first 15 holes with a surprisingly strong breeze blowing in for the last 3 holes. As mentioned earlier, the first 8 greens were unmowed and dewy.

Rules of the Round:

Nothing interesting this round.

Round 12: SteveB Scores

17th June:
[Presentation 2023Jun17a]
Presentation

As usual with stroke play the scores were up and down today.

SteveB won the round with 4 hole wins and 6 skins just ahead of Mark with 5.

The Nth Turramurra competition was the Winter Cup stroke play event with scratch and nett prizes. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers. Also, the maximum 10 strokes per hole local rule was in place.

The scratch winner scored 70 and the nett winner scored 64. A grade leading stableford score was 40 points and B grade leader scored 35 points.

SteveB with a tee shot of 225m.

Nearest to the pin (15th):

Sujay with a tee shot to 1.75m.

Conditions:

It was a cold start on a clear winters day. As the round progressed, the temperature increased to balmy 20 degrees.

Rules of the Round:

6.3 Ball Used in Play of Hole

Purpose of Rule: A hole is played as a progression of strokes made from the teeing area to the putting green and into the hole. After teeing off, the player is normally required to play the same ball until the hole is completed. The player gets a penalty for making a stroke at a wrong ball or a substituted ball when substitution is not allowed by the Rules.

c. Wrong Ball

(1) Making Stroke at Wrong Ball. A player must not make a stroke at a wrong ball.

Exception – Ball Moving in Water: There is no penalty if a player makes a stroke at a wrong ball that is moving in water in a penalty area or in temporary water:

  • The stroke does not count, and
  • The player must correct the mistake under the Rules by playing the right ball from its original spot or by taking relief under the Rules.

Penalty for Playing Wrong Ball in Breach of Rule 6.3c(1):

In match play, the player gets the general penalty (loss of hole):

  • If the player and opponent play each other’s ball during the play of a hole, the first to make a stroke at a wrong ball gets the general penalty (loss of hole).
  • But if it is not known which wrong ball was played first, there is no penalty and the hole must be played out with the balls exchanged.

In stroke play, the player gets the general penalty (two penalty strokes) and must correct the mistake by continuing play with the original ball by playing it as it lies or taking relief under the Rules:

  • The stroke made with the wrong ball and any more strokes before the mistake is corrected (including strokes made and any additional penalty strokes solely from playing that ball) do not count.
  • If the player does not correct the mistake before making a stroke to begin another hole or, for the final hole of the round, before returning their scorecard, the player is disqualified.

(2) What to Do When Player’s Ball Was Played by Another Player as Wrong Ball. If it is known or virtually certain that the player’s ball was played by another player as a wrong ball, the player must replace the original ball or another ball on the original spot (which if not known must be estimated) (see Rule 14.2).

This applies whether or not the original ball has been found.

Round 11: Surprise Count-back Win to PeterH

4th June:
[Presentation 2023Jun04a]
Presentation

In a first for NT Skins, this match took place on a Sunday. Conditions were difficult with rain showers, wind and some fairways bald and wet. Needless to say, with the exception of Craig, the stableford scores were poor.

In a shock result, PeterH took the trophy by a count-back from SteveB with three hole wins to two.

The Sunday Nth Turramurra competition was mixed single stableford with 28 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers.

The winner scored 34 points with Craig close behind on 32 points tied for fourth.

Stableford Individual Scores
[Name (hcap) Points Skins]:
Birdies:

5th (par 3): Sujay
15th (par 3): DavidM.

Longest drive (13th hole):

Craig with a tee shot of 194m.

Nearest to the pin (15th):

DavidM with a tee shot to 1.91m.

Conditions:

The weather was overcast with some showers and variable wind. Some fairways on the front nine are in poor shape with saturated dead grass.

Rules of the Round:

Rule 19 - Unplayable Ball

19.1 Player May Decide to Take Unplayable Ball Relief Anywhere Except Penalty Area

A player is the only person who may decide to treat their ball as unplayable by taking penalty relief under Rule 19.2 or 19.3.

Unplayable ball relief is allowed anywhere on the course, except in a penalty area.

If a ball is unplayable in a penalty area, the player’s only relief option is to take penalty relief under Rule 17.

19.2 Relief Options for Unplayable Ball in General Area or on Putting Green

A player may take unplayable ball relief using one of the three options in Rule 19.2a, b or c, in each case adding one penalty stroke.

The player may take stroke-and-distance relief under Rule 19.2a even if the original ball has not been found and identified.

But to take back-on-the-line relief under Rule 19.2b or lateral relief under Rule 19.2c, the player must know the spot of the original ball.

a. Stroke-and-Distance Relief

The player may play the original ball or another ball from where the previous stroke was made (see Rule 14.6).

b. Back-on-the-Line Relief

The player may drop the original ball or another ball (see Rule 14.3) behind the spot of the original ball, keeping the spot of the original ball between the hole and the spot where the ball is dropped (with no limit as to how far back the ball may be dropped). The spot on the line where the ball first touches the ground when dropped creates a relief area that is one club-length in any direction from that point, but with these limits:

  • Limits on Location of Relief Area:
    • Must not be nearer the hole than the spot of the orignal ball, and
    • May be in any area of the course, but
    • Must be in the same area of the course that the ball first touched when dropped.

c. Lateral Relief

The player may drop the original ball or another ball in this lateral relief area (see Rule 14.3):

  • Reference Point: The spot of the original ball. But when the ball lies above the ground, such as in a tree, the reference point is the spot directly below the ball on the ground.
  • Size of Relief Area Measured from Reference Point: Two club-lengths, but with these limits:
  • Limits on Location of Relief Area:
    • Must not be nearer the hole than the reference point, and
    • May be in any area of the course, but
    • If more than one area of the course is located within two club-lengths of the reference point, the ball must come to rest in the relief area in the same area of the course that the ball first touched when dropped in the relief area.

Round 10: DavidM has a third win

20th May:
[Presentation 2023May20a]
Today's Winner

PeterD described it as a very pleasant round today. Also it was a single group giving us live skins results on each hole.

Despite persisting with his deteriorating dad jokes, DavidM played well and went on to win 5 holes and take the round with 8 skins.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single stableford, 2BBB Stableford and the relatives cup with 119 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers.

The A grade winner scored 38 points and the B grade winner scored 39 points.
The winning 2BBB score was 47 points.

Interesting Shots:
Conditions:

Fine and sunny with some challenging wind.

Rules of the Round:

Rule Clarification 8.1b/6 – When Damage That Is Partially On and Partially Off Putting Green May Be Repaired

If an individual area of damage is both on and off a putting green, the entire area of damage may be repaired.

For example, if a ball mark is partially on and partially off the edge of the putting green, it is unreasonable to allow a player to repair only the portion of damage on the putting green. Therefore, the entire ball mark (both on and off the putting green) may be repaired.

The same applies to other individual areas of damage, such as animal tracks or hoofs marks, or club indentations.

However, if a portion of damage extends off the green and is not identifiable as part of the damage on the green, it may not be repaired if the repair improves the conditions affecting the stroke.

For example, an entire shoe print that starts on the putting green and extends off it may be repaired. However, if one shoe print is on the putting green and another shoe print is off the putting green, only the shoe print on the putting green may be repaired as they are two separate areas of damage.

Round 9: Sujay takes the triple crown

6th May:
[Presentation 2023May06a]
Today's Winner

Today Sujay dominated the skins with some fine ball striking. After a wipe on the starting hole he proceeded to score 9 skins, win the longest drive and the NTP to take the first triple crown of the year.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single stableford and Fourball Stableford Round Aggregate (Best 2) with 126 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers.

The A grade winner scored 38 points and the B grade winner scored 41 points. Sujay took B grade third place with 40 points (losing 2nd place on count-back).
The winning Fourball aggregate (best 2) score was 94 points.

[Todays Event 2023-05-06]
Today's Event
Discussion of the Round

During the card and skins processing after the round, a protracted debate took place. The topic was "How to Calculate a Fourball Aggregate Score".

On one side was PeterD, PeterH and Sujay, on the other was SteveB, SteveH and DavidM. Mark was very wise and remained totally silent during the process.

After much futile talk, the adjudicator (pro shop) was consulted and the win went to the Steves and David as the opposition had not fully read the event sheet. During the debate, there was some confusion / amusement when the word "Nomenclature" was introduced to the discussion.

Interesting Shots:
  1. PeterH struggled to near the 8th green in 4 shots. Things improved from there with a 30 or 40 metre putt tracking relentlessly to the cup for a par.
  2. Sujay made a birdie on the par five 9th after a spectacular approach shot landing a metre from the flag.
  3. Another fine shot by Sujay to take the longest drive on the 13th.
Conditions:

Fine and sunny; pleasant autumn weather.

Rules of the Round:

Sprinkler Head Relief

“If a player has a sprinkler head between their ball and the line to the hole, do they get free relief? The ball isn’t on the green.”

No, not normally. But there is sometimes another way.

Sprinkler heads are immovable obstructions, which are defined as an abnormal course condition in the Rules.

You are allowed free relief, under Rule 16.1, if your ball touches or is on an abnormal course condition, if it physically interferes with the area of intended stance and swing,
or
“only when the ball is on the putting green, an abnormal course condition on or off the putting green intervenes in the line of play”.

Round 8: DavidM Makes it a Double

22nd April:
[Presentation 2023Apr22a]
Trophy Presentation

A consistent round for PeterD, Mark and DavidM with DavidM taking the holes that mattered to retain the trophy. As is very common, PeterD found that consistent two pointers does not win skins.

PeterH had a few problems with the course boundary in the wet weather and with SteveB made a combined total of 8 wiped holes.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single stableford and 2 ball multiplier with 114 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers.

The A grade winner scored 37 points (on count-back) and the B grade winner scored 43 points. Mark took B grade third place with 37 points (also on count-back).
The winning 2 ball multiplier score was 72 points.

Stableford Individual Scores
[Name (hcap) Points Skins]:

14th: Mark.

Longest drive (13th hole):

Sujay with a tee shot of 245m.

Nearest to the pin (15th):

PeterH with a tee shot to 3.53m.

Interesting Shots:
  1. On the 4th, the birdie putt by DavidM traveled a long way and even jumped over a lump in the green before finding the bottom of the cup.
  2. PeterH stole the NTP on the 15th after landing the tee shot well off the green and then rolling down the slope to stop three and a half metres from the flag.
Conditions:

The round started in overcast conditions with rain threatening. We stayed dry until the half-way point and were wet from then on.

Rules of the Round:

Model Local Rule E-5

“When a player’s ball has not been found or is known or virtually certain to be out of bounds, the player may proceed as follows rather than proceeding under stroke and distance.

For two penalty strokes, the player may take relief by dropping the original ball or another ball in this relief area (see Rule 14.3):

Two Estimated Reference Points:

a. Ball Reference Point: The point where the original ball is estimated to have:

  • Come to rest on the course, or
  • Last crossed the edge of the course boundary to go out of bounds.

b. Fairway Reference Point: The point of fairway of the hole being played that is nearest to the ball reference point, but is not nearer the hole than the ball reference point.

For purposes of this Local Rule, “fairway” means any area of grass in the general area that is cut to fairway height or less.

If a ball is estimated to be lost on the course or last crossed the edge of the course boundary short of the fairway, the fairway reference point may be a grass path or a teeing ground for the hole being played cut to fairway height or less.

Size of Relief Area Based on Reference Points: Anywhere between:

  • A line from the hole through the ball reference point (and within two club-lengths to the outside of that line), and
  • A line from the hole through the fairway reference point (and within two club-lengths to the fairway side of that line).

But with these limits:

Limits on Location of Relief Area:

  • Must be in the general area, and
  • Must not be nearer the hole than the ball reference point.

Once the player puts a ball in play under this Local Rule:

  • The original ball that was lost or out of bounds is no longer in play and must not be played.
  • This is true even if the ball is found on the course before the end of the three-minute search time (see Rule 6.3b).

But, the player may not use this option to take relief for the original ball when:

  • That ball is known or virtually certain to have come to rest in a penalty area, or
  • The player has played another ball provisionally under penalty of stroke and distance (see Rule 18.3).

A player may use this option to take relief for a provisional ball that has not been found or is known or virtually certain to be out of bounds.

Penalty for Playing Ball from a Wrong Place in Breach of Local Rule: General Penalty Under Rule 14.7a.”

Round 7: First Countback of the Year

8th April:
[Presentation 2023Apr08a]
Trophy Presentation

By SteveB

With the round falling on Easter Saturday there was a reduced field of only 3 golfers this time out. SteveB, SteveH and DavidM all had hot streaks at various points around the course and skins were won on most holes. At the completion of the 18th hole each had accumulated 6 skins. DavidM took the win on countback with each of his 6 skins coming on a different hole.

Luckily none of us missed the 3rd hole left of the bridge as there was a large red bellied black snake sunning itself in the hazard.

The Nth Turramurra competition was two ball aggregate for the team competition this time rather than the usual 2BBB. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers.

The A grade winner scored 38 points and the B grade winner scored 40 points. DavidM was the B grade runner-up with 37 points.

Rules of the Round:

Rule 6.3c Wrong ball

You must not make a stroke at a wrong ball.

In stroke play: If you make a stroke at a wrong ball, you get the general penalty (two penalty strokes) and must correct the mistake by continuing play with the original ball by playing it as it lies or taking relief under the Rules:

  • The stroke made with the wrong ball and any more strokes before the mistake is corrected do not count.
  • If you do not correct the mistake before making a stroke to begin a nother hole or, for the final hole of the round, before returning your scorecard, you are disqualified.

Round 6: Mark Leads the Way

25th March:
[Presentation 2023Mar25a]
Trophy Presentation

Five players won single holes in round 6 and shared the skins. Mark made the most of his win with a par on the 14th and collected an unbeatable 9 skins.

The win for Mark takes him to a one point lead in the championship.

This was the first round for DavidM after qualifying and despite making 36 points: no skins.

The Nth Turramurra competition was the usual stableford and 2BBB with 110 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers.

The A grade winner scored 41 points and the B grade winner scored 44 points. SteveB was the B grade runner-up with 38 points. No score available for the 2BBB winners.

Round 5: PeterD Wins Again!

18th March:
[Presentation 2023Mar18a]
Trophy Presentation

PeterD is now on a winning run. He has found a way to overcome the unfair advantage given to the high handicappers and has moved to the top of the 2023 leaderboard.

Teething problems with the two-tee start meant that there was a long delay for the first tee as we waited for 11th tee starters to move through.

The Nth Turramurra competition was the usual stableford and 2BBB with 100 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers.

The A grade winner scored 38 points and the B grade winner scored 42 points. No score available for the 2BBB winners.

Interesting Shots:

⚪ An impromptu putting competition broke out on the practice green while waiting for the first tee to clear. SteveB was the champion as he sunk a triple breaking 40 metre putt.

⚪ Continuing a trend 🤞, PeterH holed a bunker shot for birdie on the 10th.

⚪ SteveB was near to making a birdie on the 14th. The ball hit the flag stick and stopped millimetres from the hole.

⚪ PeterD sunk a 20 metre putt for par on the index one 16th.

Conditions:

The weather was fine and hot.

Rules of the Round:

Rule 19 - Unplayable Ball

If you are in a situation where you don’t want to or don’t think you can play your ball, you always have the option of taking relief under the unplayable ball Rule.

You are the only person who can decide that your ball is unplayable, and this can be done anywhere on the golf course except when your ball lies in a penalty area. If your ball is in a penalty area, your only relief option is to take relief under the penalty area Rule.

When you decide that your ball is unplayable, you have three relief options, all for one penalty stroke.

  • Your first option is to go back to the spot of your previous stroke and play again (stroke and distance relief).
  • Your second option is to go back as far as you’d like and drop on the line from the hole through the spot where the ball lies (back-on-the-line relief).
  • Your third option is to drop anywhere within two club-lengths of where your ball lies, no closer to the hole (lateral relief).

Round 4: A Rare PeterD Win

25th February:
[Presentation 2023Feb25a]
Trophy Presentation

After 2 rounds with zero skins, PeterD has overcome the much-mentioned low handicap obstacle to take the Skins trophy.

SteveH was looking good in the front 9 and Craig dominated the back 9 but it was the PeterD consistency winning out.

The Nth Turramurra competition was the usual stableford and 2BBB with 126 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and all bunkers were GUR.

The A grade winner scored 42 points and the B grade winner scored 46 points. No score available for the 2BBB winners.

Interesting Shots:

😎 After an ordinary 17 holes, PeterH chipped in for a birdie on the 18th.

Conditions:

The weather was fine and warm.

Rules of the Round:

Taking Relief from Ground Under Repair (GUR)

Refer to rule 16.1

When dropping from ground under repair, you must find the nearest point of full relief and drop within one club length. After the drop, the ball must be no closer to the hole. The ball must be dropped from knee-height.

If your stance is still in the ground under repair after you dropped, you must drop again. Your ball is in play after you have dropped and there is no interference from the ground under repair.

Round 3: PeterH Steals the Win

11th February:
[Presentation 2023Feb11a]
Trophy Presentation

Once again Sujay was in good form and had won 4 holes and six skins by the 9th. It looked like another easy win.

Then the injustice of skins golf interfered (no, not PeterD's handicap injustice). Many holes on the back 9 were squared and PeterH took the round with just 2 hole wins.

Late news. Founding member Mark has created a new prestigious award, namely "The Big Kauhuna". The Big Kahuna is awarded to the player simultaneously taking the skins, the NT stableford plus the NT 2BBB. Thus far, no award has been created for the player to take the skins triple crown as well as the NT stableford and 2BBB. PeterH is now the first winner of the big kahuna award.

The Nth Turramurra competition was the usual stableford and 2BBB. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was still in place for fairways and bunkers.

The A grade winner scored 39 points and the B grade winner was PeterH with 40 points. The 2BBB winners were Craig & PeterH with 48 points.

😞 Also, there was a mystery lost ball by Craig on the 9th after the tee shot hit the fairway.

Conditions:

The weather was again draining for all players with high temperature and humidity.

Rules of the Round:

Rule 16.1 Abnormal Course Conditions (Including Immovable Obstructions)

This Rule covers free relief that is allowed from interference by animal holes, ground under repair, immovable obstructions or temporary water:

These are collectively called abnormal course conditions, but each has a separate definition.

This Rule does not give relief from movable obstructions (a different type of free relief is allowed under Rule 15.2a) or boundary objects or integral objects (no free relief is allowed).

a. When Relief Is Allowed

(1) Meaning of Interference by Abnormal Course Condition. Interference exists when any one of these is true:

  • The player’s ball touches or is in or on an abnormal course condition,
  • An abnormal course condition physically interferes with the player’s area of intended stance or area of intended swing, or
  • Only when the ball is on the putting green, an abnormal course condition on or off the putting green intervenes on the line of play.

If the abnormal course condition is close enough to distract the player but does not meet any of these requirements, there is no interference under this Rule.

Round 2: A super start for Sujay

28th January:
[Presentation 2023Jan28a]

Sujay and Mark returned to skins in round 2 and immediately dominated the event. Sujay took the trophy with an impressive 11 skins and Mark was unlucky to lose after taking 5 hole wins.

The Nth Turramurra competition was the usual stableford and 2BBB. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers.

Trophy Presentation

SteveH has quickly made an impression by taking the trophy in his first competitive round. The signs were there as early as hole three when he landed the approach shot close to the flag from the rough and went on to make 4 points.

PeterD has now moved on from aiming at good stableford scores; inspired by James MacDonald, the focus now is on making birdies.

The Nth Turramurra competition was the usual stableford and 2BBB. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers.

The A grade winner scored 41 points and the B grade winner scored 44 points. The 2BBB winners scored 50 points.
