Round 23: SteveB Takes the Lead

16th November:
[Trophy Presentation]
Trophy Presentation

SteveB had a fine round and finished the last nine with 21 points. Both the Steves won 2 holes with SteveB taking the critical 14th to add 7 skins and take the round.

The Steves took on the Peters in the 2BBB and came out ahead by three.

There is one skins championship round remaining and SteveB is leading DavidM by two and SteveH by six. We are looking forward to an aggressive competition in the last round.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single stableford and two ball best ball stableford with 103 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place in the fairways and bunkers.

The A grade winner scored 39 points and the B grade winner 44 points. The 2BBB winners combined for 50 points.

Rules of the Round:
Rule 6.3 Ball Used in Play of Hole

Purpose of Rule: A hole is played as a progression of strokes made from the teeing area to the putting green and into the hole. After teeing off, the player is normally required to play the same ball until the hole is completed. The player gets a penalty for making a stroke at a wrong ball or a substituted ball when substitution is not allowed by the Rules.

a. Holing Out with Same Ball Played from Teeing Area

A player may play any conforming ball when starting a hole from the teeing area and may change balls between two holes.

The player must hole out with the same ball played from the teeing area, except when:

  • That ball is lost or comes to rest out of bounds, or
  • The player substitutes another ball (whether or not allowed to do so).
  • The player should put an identifying mark on the ball to be played (see Rule 7.2).

Rule 18.3 Provisional Ball
18.3a/1 – When Player May Play Provisional Ball

When a player is deciding whether they are allowed to play a provisional ball, only the information that is known by the player at that time is considered.

Examples where a provisional ball may be played include when:

  • The original ball might be in a penalty area, but it might also be lost outside a penalty area or be out of bounds.
  • A player believes the original ball came to rest in the general area and it might be lost. If it is later found in a penalty area within the three-minute search time, the player must abandon the provisional ball.

SteveH put together a very complete performance to post the group's best stableford score and win the skins.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single stableford and two ball best ball stableford. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place in the fairways and bunkers.

Another round has been decided by count-back with Craig defeating Sujay by three wins to two. Craig has now joined PeterH with a count-back win rate of 57%. Mark will be shocked.

The difficult tee times were partially corrected after some frenetic whatsapp discussion on Friday. Unfortunately this left SteveB playing in a non-skins group.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single stableford and two ball best ball stableford with 106 players registering a score. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place in the general area and bunkers.

There is no penalty for leaving mud on the ball even when the preferred lie local rule is in place.

Round 15: Three way count-back in the rain

27th July:
[Trophy Presentation]

Steady drizzle and a weather radar picture suggesting more was on the way reduced the field to four hardy players. The drizzle persisted through the front 9 but cleared in time for the back 9.

The skins count was an eventful one with skins won on 11 holes and the count ending in a three way tie. Craig prevailed on count-back due to winning on 4 holes.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single stableford and two ball best ball stableford with 59 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place in the general area and bunkers.

The winner, Warren, who played with the two Steves, scored 39 points. The 2BBB winners scored 45 points with Warren and SteveB placing 5th with 42 points. Craig and Dave were paired with Sujay even though he didn't play!

The Nth Turramurra competition was single stableford and two ball aggregate stableford with 103 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies with compulsory tee up local rule was in place in the general area and bunkers were GUR.

The A Grade winner scored 41 points with DavidM third on 37 points. The B Grade winner scored 38 points and the 2B Aggregate winners scored 71 points.

It was a day for squared holes, 13 in total. SteveH and DavidM won two holes each and with descriptions of play in the background DavidM took the holes that mattered to pick up an unbeatable 9 skins.

SteveB had a fine round with 36 points. However, he scored zero skins as all his three point holes were squared by his nemesis SteveH.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single stableford and 2BBB, NTP on the 15th with 116 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place in the general area and 30cm preferred lies in bunkers (rake first then place). Full relief from bare patches on Fairways.

SteveB masters the weather, Par and Skins!

15th June:
[Trophy Presentation]

The morning started bleakly but luckily no-one blinked on WhatsApp and we all proceeded to the course.

Today's event was a par event which for many players was the first time they had played it. SteveB continued his good run of form with a close skins win and also finished up the best of the Par scores amongst the skins group.

A lonely sole, Mohn, was alone in the group behind us, so SteveB and PeterD (to provide words of wisdom) joined him to provide two groups of 3 today.

Par event scoring was low with a 0 and -1 winning A and B grade respectively.

We had difficult conditions today with wet fairways and strong winds. The preferred lies rule in the general area was appreciated and used extensively.

For the first time there was a 3 way count-back for the trophy. SteveB was the winner by taking 2 hole wins ahead of David and Mark with 1 each.

Sujay leads the skins championship on 30 with Mark second on 27.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single stableford and 2BBB stableford with 101 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place "through the green" and preferred lies in bunkers (rake first then place). Full relief from bare patches on Fairways.

Round 6: PeterD Wins At Last

23rd March:
[Trophy Presentation]
Trophy Presentation

PeterD had a fine 3 over round to take the trophy for the first time since March 2023 with 9 skins just ahead of Sujay with 8. This may calm his criticism of the high handicappers for a while.

Sujay impressed James (and us) with a 7 over round scoring 46 points to win the NT stableford and 2BBB for the second time in a fortnight.

Sujay now leads the skins championship on 27 with Mark second on 17.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single stableford and 2BBB stableford with 103 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for bunkers and full relief from bare patches on Fairways.

The A grade winner was Sujay with 46 points and the B grade winner scored 41 points. Sujay and PeterH again won the 2BBB with 48 points.

Rules of the Round:

Rule 11 - Ball in Motion Accidentally Hits Person, Animal or Object; Deliberate Actions to Affect Ball in Motion

Purpose of Rule:

Rule 11 covers what to do if the player’s ball in motion hits a person, animal, equipment or anything else on the course. When this happens accidentally, there is no penalty and the player normally must accept the result, whether favourable or not, and play the ball from where it comes to rest. Rule 11 also restricts a player from deliberately taking actions to affect where any ball in motion might come to rest.

This Rule applies any time a ball in play is in motion (whether after a stroke or otherwise), except when a ball has been dropped in a relief area and has not yet come to rest. That situation is covered by Rule 14.3.

11.1 Ball in Motion Accidentally Hits Person or Outside Influence

a. No Penalty to Any Player

If a player’s ball in motion accidentally hits any person (including the player) or outside influence:

  • There is no penalty to any player.
  • This is true even if the ball hits the player, the opponent or any other player or any of their caddies or equipment.

Round 5: Mark Masters the 16th

9th March:
[Trophy Presentation]
Trophy Presentation

The "active" founding members are continuing in good form. This time it is Mark taking the trophy with 10 skins. Mark's spectacular victory with the birdie on the 16th strangely inspired some superfluous musical intervention from DavidM.

Sujay has continued the dominance of the Skins team at Nth Turramurra with another B-grade win. His score included a series of four holes (2 to 5) adding up to 2 under par.

For the first time in 2024, we had a full field of 8 starters in the Skins round.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single stableford and 2BBB stableford with 111 players. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for bunkers and full relief from bare patches on Fairways.

Definition: Loose Impediment

Any unattached natural object such as:

  • Stones, loose grass, leaves, branches and sticks,
  • Dead animals and animal waste,
  • Worms, insects and similar animals that can be removed easily, and the mounds or webs they build (such as worm casts and ant hills), and
  • Clumps of compacted soil (including aeration plugs).

Such natural objects are not loose if they are:

  • Attached or growing,
  • Solidly embedded in the ground (that is, cannot be picked out easily), or
  • Sticking to the ball.

Based on this definition, the large broken tree branch on the 17th fairway is a loose impediment. Therefore, if it interferes with your swing, the branch or part of the branch may be (re)moved with no penalty as long as the ball is not caused to move.

Round 4: Summer Cup

24th February:
[Trophy Presentation]

Stroke play returned to Royal North with the playing of the Summer Cup. Unfortunately the weather refused to join in the seasonal theme with persistent misty drizzle until clearing for the last few holes.

All players struggled to put a score together and the skins scoring was decided by a SteveH par on the 13th hole after a string of squared holes.

As mentioned, the format was stroke with the overall winner taking 72 strokes and the net winner having 60 strokes. The bunkers were 30cm preferred lies and full relief was granted from the now quite rare bare patches on the fairways.

Round 3: Sujay slips into the lead

10th February:
[Trophy Presentation]

In an eventful round of skins golf the gloves came off and clubs were thrown. The persistent drizzle and light rain on the front nine left everyone damp and struggling to hold onto their clubs, culminating in Sujay and PeterD having clubs slip out of their hands while swinging.

The rain and the fact that every hole was played from the back tees conspired to keep scoring down. An excellent birdie on the 13th hole by Sujay gave him 6 skins and the win.

The Nth Turramurra competition was single stableford and 2 ball aggregate stableford. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule now only applies to bunkers, fairways are finally back to play it as it lie but still with full relief from bare patches.

The A grade winner scored 37 points and the B grade winner 38 points. The two ball aggregate winners had 70 points.

15th (par 3): Craig.

Longest drive (13th hole):

Mark with a tee shot of 200m.

Nearest to the pin (15th):

PeterH with a tee shot to 1.65 metres.

Interesting Shots:

The PeterH tee shot hit the flag on our NTP hole and dropped behind the hole. Sadly, the birdie putt was missed. The earlier birdie putt by Craig did not help.

Conditions:

There was a brief delay at the start due to late mowing of the first green. The weather was overcast and warm with light drizzle for the first few holes.

Rules of the Round:

Rule 14.1 Marking, Lifting and Cleaning Ball

This Rule applies to the deliberate “lifting” of a player’s ball at rest. This may be done in any way, which includes picking up the ball by hand, rotating it or otherwise deliberately causing it to move from its spot.

a. Spot of Ball to Be Lifted and Replaced Must Be Marked

Before lifting a ball under a Rule requiring the ball to be replaced on its original spot, the player must mark the spot which means to:

  • Place a ball-marker right behind or right next to the ball, or
  • Hold a club on the ground right behind or right next to the ball.

If the spot is marked with a ball-marker, after replacing the ball the player must remove the ball-marker before making a stroke.

If the player lifts the ball without marking its spot, marks its spot in a wrong way or makes a stroke with a ball-marker left in place, the player gets one penalty stroke.

Skins 2024 is underway with some hot weather and tough parking conditions.

A determined Mark has started this year well in order to accumulate points before taking a break in the second half of the year.

Skins were won in ones and twos until PeterH picked up 5 after a series of squared holes. Mark then took the lead on the 16th after a similar series of squared holes.

The Nth Turramurra competition was the usual stableford and 2BBB. The 30cm Preferred Lies local rule was in place for fairways and bunkers.

The A grade winner scored 40 points and the B grade winner scored 40 points. No news on the score for the 2BBB winners.

Longest drive (13th hole):

SteveH with a tee shot of 250m.

Nearest to the pin (15th):

Mark with a tee shot to 3.2mbs.

Interesting Shots:

SteveB had an adventurous time on the par three 14th. The tee shot avoided OOB and hit the side net, the second crossed to the right over the cart path into the rough. The third shot pleased the gallery by dropping into the cup for par after one bounce.

SteveB also unveiled his new Scotty Cameron Newport putter. We are looking forward to some spectacular one-putts during 2024.

Conditions:

Very hot and humid all round with an official temperature of 30 degrees.

Parking conditions were very stressful due to a junior soccer carnival.

Rules of the Round:

Out of Bounds Definition

All areas outside the boundary edge of the course as defined by the Committee. All areas inside that edge are in bounds.

The boundary edge of the course extends both up above the ground and down below the ground:

  • This means that all ground and anything else (such as any natural or artificial object) inside the boundary edge is in bounds, whether on, above or below the surface of the ground.
  • If an object is both inside and outside the boundary edge (such as steps attached to a boundary fence, or a tree rooted outside the edge with branches extending inside the edge or vice versa), only the part of the object that is outside the edge is out of bounds.

The boundary edge should be defined by boundary objects or lines:

  • Boundary Objects: When defined by stakes or a fence, the boundary edge is defined by the line between the course-side points of the stakes or fence posts at ground level (excluding angled supports), and those stakes or fence posts are out of bounds.
  • When defined by other objects such as a wall or when the Committee wishes to treat a boundary fence in a different way, the Committee should define the boundary edge.
  • Lines: When defined by a painted line on the ground, the boundary edge is the course-side edge of the line, and the line itself is out of bounds.
  • When a line on the ground defines the boundary edge, stakes may be used to show where the boundary edge is, but they have no other meaning.

When stakes are used to define or show the boundary edge, they are boundary objects.

Boundary stakes or lines should be white.
