2019 Xmas Round

7th December:
[Presentation 2019Dec07a]
2019 Playing Group

A field of six entered the xmas round for 2019.

The announcement of the winner had to wait until the slower second group completed its round. The anticipation was stretched further when the result depended on a count-back with 2 players on 31 points. Eventually it was determined that Craig won the trophy with Mark runner-up.

Xmas Round Rules for 2019

As no founding members could make it to the Rules Committee meeting, some innovative rules were canvassed before sanity prevailed resulting in the following.

  1. The usual maximum of 14 clubs may be carried.
  2. One club plus putter to be used on each hole.
  3. The player is responsible for selecting the club for each hole.
  4. Standard stableford scoring applies with Golflink Handicaps and Skins Social Handicaps to be used.

Penalty for breach of rules: zero points for the hole.

Round 22: Craig In Control

23rd November:
[Presentation 2019Nov23a]
Trophy Presentation

Craig had a fine round taking second place in the NT competition with 43 points and the NTP and a birdie on the 5th hole.

There were a number of four pointers scored, all on the front nine: 3 to Craig and 2 to Kim.

In the 2019 skins championship, Craig needed 10 in this match to catch Mark, but finished 3 skins short.

The disappointment showed as you can see on the right. He took the trophy and left early.

You gotta have a dream ...

Our resident philosopher provided some sage advice during the round:

"You gotta have a dream, if you don't have a dream, How you gonna have a dream come true?"

This caused much misplaced hilarity in the gallery as it was assumed that this wisdom came from the children's film Frozen.

It turns out that the quote comes from a much more serious source: the song "Happy Talk" in the musical South Pacific.

Round 21: Kim wins again!

9th November:
[Presentation 2019Nov09a]
Trophy Presentation

Kim is dominating the Skins results with three wins in succession.

One round to go for the 2019 Championship and despite Kim's good form, no-one can catch Mark.

Longest drive (18th hole):

After all players missed the 13th fairway the longest drive moved to the 18th where Craig won with a tee shot of 175m.

Interesting Shots:

On the 14th green competition NTP, Kim landed his ball closest to the pin but did not qualify. PeterH then attempted to win the NTP with a tee shot 4.3 metres from the pin. It was a futile attempt however as a later player won with a 3.51m shot.

Catering:

by Craig. Next round to be catered by PeterH.

Rules of the Round:

Rule 19 - Unplayable Ball

19.1 Player May Decide to Take Unplayable Ball Relief Anywhere Except Penalty Area

A player is the only person who may decide to treat his or her ball as unplayable by taking penalty relief under Rule 19.2 or 19.3.

- Unplayable ball relief is allowed anywhere on the course, except in a penalty area.

- If a ball is unplayable in a penalty area, the player's only relief option is to take penalty relief under Rule 17.

Weather:

Cool and windy early on, followed by sunny and hot.

Round 20: Kim wins

26th October:
[Presentation 2019Oct26a]

The round started in overcast and windy conditions with a chance of showers. On the front nine, play was inconsistent and the skins were shared around.

Kim picked up his game on the back nine with 8 skins and won the round easily.

Rules of the Round:

18.2 Ball Lost or Out of Bounds: Stroke-and-Distance Relief Must Be Taken

b. What to Do When Ball Is Lost or Out of Bounds

If a ball is lost or out of bounds, the player must take stroke-and-distance relief by adding one penalty stroke and playing the original ball or another ball from where the previous stroke was made (see Rule 14.6).

13.1 Actions Allowed or Required on Putting Greens

f. Relief Must Be Taken from Wrong Green

Interference under this Rule exists when your ball is on a wrong green or a wrong green physically interferes with your area of intended stance or area of intended swing.

When there is interference by a wrong green, you must not play the ball as it lies. Instead, you must take free relief by dropping the original ball or another ball in the relief area.

There is no relief under this Rule if interference exists only because you choose a club, type of stance or swing or direction of play that is clearly unreasonable under the circumstances.

Weather:

Overcast and windy early on, followed by sunny and hot.

Round 19: Kim wins on the 18th

12th October:
[Presentation 2019Oct12a]

  1. the teeing area the player must play from in starting the hole he or she is playing,
  2. all penalty areas,
  3. all bunkers, and
  4. the putting green of the hole the player is playing.

The general area includes:

  • All teeing locations on the course other than the teeing area, and
  • All wrong greens.

28th September:
[Presentation 2019Sep28a]

Round 16: A First Win for Kim

31st August:
[Presentation 2019Aug31a]
Trophy Presentation

The heavy rain for the days leading up to the round deterred many players, banned the use of golf carts and prompted the postponing of the "Doing It For Jarrod" round.

An advantage of the poor conditions meant that we had the course to ourselves for most of the round. The soggy course held no fears for the regular players and notably Kim was striking the ball impressively.

Rules of the Round:

The Rights of the single player.

Does a golfer playing alone have any right to play through, or does a single have to allow all other groups to play through despite being faster?

The etiquette section of the Official Rules of Golf used to say:
"A single player has no standing and should give way to a match of any kind."

However, this rule was changed in 2004.

The rule is now as follows.

5.6 Unreasonable Delay; Prompt Pace of Play
b. Prompt Pace of Play

A round of golf is meant to be played at a prompt pace.

Your pace of play is likely to affect how long it will take other players to play their rounds, including both those in your group and those in following groups. You are encouraged to allow faster groups to play through.

The implication is that the definition of a group includes a single player.

16.1 Abnormal Course Conditions (Including Immovable Obstructions)

This Rule covers free relief that is allowed from interference by animal holes, ground under repair, immovable obstructions or temporary water:

These are collectively called abnormal course conditions, but each has a separate Definition.

This Rule does not give relief from movable obstructions (a different type of free relief is allowed under Rule 15.2a) or boundary objects or integral objects (no free relief is allowed).

a. When Relief Is Allowed

(1) Meaning of Interference by Abnormal Course Condition. Interference exists when any one of these is true:

  • The player’s ball touches or is in or on an abnormal course condition,
  • An abnormal course condition physically interferes with the player’s area of intended stance or area of intended swing, or
  • Only when the ball is on the putting green, an abnormal course condition on or off the putting green intervenes on the line of play.

If the abnormal course condition is close enough to distract the player but does not meet any of these requirements, there is no interference under this Rule.

(2) Relief Allowed Anywhere on Course Except When Ball Is in Penalty Area. Relief from interference by an abnormal course condition is allowed under Rule 16.1 only when both:

  • The abnormal course condition is on the course (not out of bounds), and
  • The ball is anywhere on the course, except in a penalty area (where the player’s only relief is under Rule 17).
Weather:

Overcast and cool with occasional rain showers.

Round 15: Clean sweep averted

17th August:
[Presentation 2019Aug17a]
Trophy Presentation

Today's game was teetering on the brink of a clean sweep, with Craig winning the first 12 skins. The next 5 holes were halved with 6 skins riding on the last. But Mark hit a stunning second shot into the 18th, securing a comfortable par and averting the clean sweep.

The most remarkable thing about today's round was not the good fortune Craig had but the bad luck Mark had. His luck included nearly being hit on the 10th and losing a ball that should have been in the middle of the fairway on the 17th. Very mysterious.

20th July:

After several years in the white shipping container, the North Turramurra pro shop has returned to the original club house, which has been renovated and painted very white. There are plans for a coffee shop. It also has some nice new lounges and tables and chairs. Very impressive.

On the course play was very relaxed today due to the pleasant weather conditions and lack of other players. PeterD was hampered by using his Sydney set of clubs which seem inferior to the Melbourne set of clubs. The Melbourne clubs are likely to be in Sydney for the next round.

Kim has now played 2 qualifying rounds and is eligible for skins next time.

After a very long sabbatical Kim returned to Skins golf today, showing once again his long distance hitting skills to amaze the boys. And he also joined PeterD in espousing his new found philosophy and wisdom.

PeterH was unavailable and was sorely missed. Mark won again in a very tight contest which was decided on the 3rd last putt of the day with a long save on the last by PeterD.

The NT competition returned to the usual stableford this round and most tee boxes had moved forward. No prizes won by the skins group.

The NT competition today was PAR and 2BBB PAR. This caused some protracted post round calculations to finalise the 2BBB results. Craig was runner-up in the singles event and took the NTP. No news on the pairs winners.

In the Skins, the round win was again in doubt until the last hole where Mark won a second skin with a spectacular 12 metre putt and left the round win to Craig on count-back.

Round 7: Craig Collects a First Win for 2019

27th April:
[Presentation 2019Apr27a]
Trophy Presentation

The NT competition today was single stableford and 2 ball aggregate stableford. Also,we again welcomed PeterD our occasional inter-state visitor.

After Craig took the first 2 skins with a win on hole 2, PeterH had a purple patch and won 6 successive holes. The patch did not last and Craig went on to gather skins on the back 9.

PeterD opened his account for 2019 by winning 3 holes for 3 skins.

The round win was in doubt until the last hole where PeterD gained his third skin and delivered the round win to Craig.

6th (par 4): this time the approach shot went to the right of the green heading for the steep jungle but somehow ran up the green and stopped within range of a birdie putt.

Rules of the Round:

This rule was prompted by a recent round at the soggy Woolgoolga RSL Golf Club at Safety Beach.

Definition: Temporary Water

Any temporary accumulation of water on the surface of the ground (such as puddles from rain or irrigation or an overflow from a body of water) that:

  • Is not in a penalty area, and
  • Can be seen before or after the player takes a stance (without pressing down excessively with his or her feet).

It is not enough for the ground to be merely wet, muddy or soft or for the water to be momentarily visible as the player steps on the ground; an accumulation of water must remain present either before or after the stance is taken.

Special cases:

  • Dew and Frost are not temporary water.
  • Snow and Natural Ice (other than frost), are either loose impediments or, when on the ground, temporary water, at the player’s option.
  • Manufactured Ice is an obstruction.

Rule 16.1 Abnormal Course Conditions (Including Immovable Obstructions)

This Rule covers free relief that is allowed from interference by animal holes, ground under repair, immovable obstructions or temporary water:

  • These are collectively called abnormal course conditions, but each has a separate Definition.
  • This Rule does not give relief from movable obstructions (a different type of free relief is allowed under Rule 15.2a) or boundary objects or integral objects (no free relief is allowed).

  • The abnormal course condition is on the course (not out of bounds), and
  • The ball is anywhere on the course [Course: The entire area of play within the edge of any boundaries set by the Committee], except in a penalty area (where the player’s only relief is under Rule 17).
Weather:

overcast, cool and breezy.

We had five skins players for the first round of the year with David returning after a long break. He picked a tough day to return with a stroke play round in the rain from the long tees.

Also our country member, PeterD, was able to join us.

Mark dominated from the start and had eight skins after the front nine. The back nine was more even with 5 squared holes.

Rules of the Round:

13.1 Actions Allowed or Required on Putting Greens

Purpose of Rule:

This Rule allows the player to do things on the putting green that are normally not allowed off the putting green, such as being allowed to mark, lift, clean and replace a ball and to repair damage and remove sand and loose soil on the putting green.
